Other fees
If you travel internationally, pay attention to the foreign transaction fees on any credit card you plan to use. The Chase Freedom Flex℠ is subject to a 3% foreign transaction fee.
Other unique benefits
This is my personal favorite: get up to $800 per claim and $1,000 per year in cell phone protection against covered damage or theft for phones listed on your monthly cell phone bill when you pay your bill with the Chase Freedom Flex℠ card. There is a maximum of 2 claims in a 12-month period, and note that there is a $50 deductible per claim.
Added to that are the same benefits you get with other Chase cards, including rewards that never expire, trip cancellation protection, purchase protection, and extended warranty protection.

Chase Freedom Flex℠ vs. Chase Freedom Unlimited®
The Chase Freedom Flex℠’s cousin, the Chase Freedom Unlimited® offers many of the same benefits, but with one key difference. Below, I break them down side-by-side so you can see which card may be right for you.
Chase Freedom Flex℠ | Chase Freedom Unlimited® | |
---|---|---|
Cash back | 5% cash back on eligible purchases in rotating categories when you activate, 5% on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3% on dining and drugstores, and 1% on all other purchases | 5% on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3% on dining and drugstores, and 1.5% on all other purchases (after the first year or $20,000 spent) |
Intro offer | $200 bonus after you spend $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. | Earn unlimited Matched Cash Back when you use your card for all purchases. At the end of your first year, Chase will automatically match all cash back earned with no limits or rewards caps. |
APR | 20.49% - 29.24% Variable | 20.49% - 29.24% Variable |
Annual fee | $0 | $0 |
As you can see, the biggest place Chase Freedom Flex℠ and Chase Freedom Unlimited® differ is in their cash back offerings. While Chase Freedom Unlimited® does offer most of the same cash back options (5% cash back on travel purchases when you book through Chase Ultimate rewards, 3% cash back on dining, takeout, and drug store purchases), the Chase Freedom Flex℠ has an additional 5% back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate. Plus Chase Freedom Flex℠ comes with cell phone protection.
The other big distinction between the Chase Freedom Flex℠ and Chase Freedom Unlimited® is that with the Chase Freedom Unlimited® you’ll earn unlimited 1.5% cash back on all other purchases and with the Chase Freedom Flex℠, you earn 1% cash back on all other purchases.
The card you choose depends entirely on your spending habits. If you’ve always wanted a card that rewards you for dining out (or grocery shopping), either one is a good pick. If you think the 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate going to be the bigger savings for you, the Chase Freedom Flex℠ is likely the card you should choose.
